Google to expand cloud infrastructure with new regions, submarine cables

People wait in line to enter a Google product launch event in San Francisco California

It will add data centers to five regions in 2018, including Montreal and the Netherlands in Q1, followed by Los Angeles, Finland and Hong Kong later in the year.

Google has already helped built three undersea fiber-optic cables, and now it plans to add three more, which will both speed up data transfers to certain reasons and offer alternative routes when data fails in other areas.

Laying groundwork for the infrastructure fights of the coming decades, Google has announced that it will be building three underwater cables across the ocean floor in efforts to improve its cloud capabilities. The cable, called Curie, after the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie, will give Google a pipeline to Latin America consumers. It will be the first new cable to land in Chile in nearly 20 years, and will become the largest single data pipe connecting the country, Google claims.

A second cable, which will run from the United States east coast to Denmark, with a stopover in Ireland, will be 7242 kms in length.

The "Havfrue" cable, named after the Danish word for mermaid, will be built with Facebook and run from the U.S.to Denmark and Ireland.

Google's Cloud platform is already up and running in thirteen regions including Tokyo, Taiwan, Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, London, Belgium, Frankfurt, Sao Paulo, Oregon, Iowa, Northern Virginia, and SC.

Muslim Girl Attacked By Man Who Cut Off Her Hijab
The attack came as Canada approaches the first anniversary at Quebec City Mosque which left six worshippers dead and 18 injured. In October a year ago , Quebec passed a contentious law banning face coverings, which was partly suspended two months later.

Google has already been named as an investor in the recently-announced HAVFRUE cable that will connect the USA to Denmark and Ireland, but it is also investing in the Hong Kong-Guam Cable System (HK-G) and Curie, which will run from Chile to Los Angeles.

Google said customers in Australia will experience improved capacity and latency from Australia to major hubs in Asia, along with increased capacity in Hong Kong and overall resilience in the Pacific.

"With Google Cloud, we have access to the world's largest network, which helps us reach our infrastructure goals and best serve our millions of users".

They join eight additional cables in which Google has direct investment, as well as many more from which the company leases capacity. "Companies like PayPal leverage our network and infrastructure to run their businesses effectively", Ben Treynor Sloss, vice president of Google's cloud platform, said in a blog post.

Here, Google is beefing its European presence, while AWS recently announced further availability zones in its EU:London region and it shouldn't be too long before you see an announcement from Microsoft, IBM and the rest.
