Former England and West Brom striker Regis dead

He wrote: "So sad to hear that Cyrille Regis has passed".

Labour MP David Lammy mourned the loss of the former Coventry, West Brom and England striker on Twitter.

You probably don't need us to tell you that Regis was a titan of the 1970s and 80s footballing landscape, thrashing in 112 goals in 297 appearances for West Brom between '77 and '84 before moving on to do likewise at Coventry City and, later, Aston Villa.

Along with Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson, who joined West Brom in 1978, the trio of black players were nicknamed "The Three Degrees" after the singing trio of the same name.

Cyrille Regis died on January 14, 2018 following an eventful career that took him from non-league to the Premier League, and saw him play five times for England.

Cyrille Regis has died aged 59, and stars from across the football world have paid tribute to the ex-West Brom star.

Taylor said in a statement on the PFA's official website, www.pfa.com: "Cyrille was a true legend and great pioneer for equality, a former PFA Young Player of The Year and real gentleman who will be sadly missed by all who knew him".

The trio faced frequent racist abuse from opposing fans throughout their careers. His second season was even better than his first, finishing with 13 goals as well as being voted the PFA Player of the Year.

Netanyahu to Macron: Heed Trump's Advice and Fix Iran Deal
In the meantime, Washington imposed other sanctions against 14 Iranian individuals and entities, including judiciary head Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.

He was appointed an MBE in 2008, and returned to West Brom as coach before going on to become a football agent.

"A tremendous striker and fine man whose legacy goes beyond the game, helping to pave a way for black footballers in this country".

Regis was born in French Guiana but moved to London when he was just five.

"The worst for me was getting my first England cap and receiving a bullet through the post saying 'if you put your foot on our Wembley turf, you'll get one of these for your knees, '" Regis recalled.

"One travesty is he only ever got five global caps when he was worth a lot more than that", he added.

He trained as an electrician and was playing for Hayes in non-league football when he attracted the attention of top clubs and was bought by West Brom for 5,000 in 1977. He also represented Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wycombe Wanderers and Chester City.

He thereafter left for Coventry in 1984, where he won the FA Cup three years later. He made a spectacular debut a few month later, scoring twice in a League Cup match against Rotherham.
