India may revive missile megadeal with Israel

India says $500 million missile deal with Israel will move ahead

India recently called off the deal to procure 8,000 missiles, souring the build up to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the country this week.

PM Modi will be hosting a private dinner for Netanyahu on January 14, 2018, after his arrival in New Delhi.

Asked whether purchase of Spike anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) from Israel through the government-to-government (G- to-G) route will be discussed during Netanyahu's visit, Bhaskar had refused to give a direct reply.

"Prime Minister of India Moody is a close friend of Israel and mine and I appreciate the fact that he personally accompanies me in large parts of the visit, " Netanyahu added. In Mumbai, Netanyahu will meet with Jewish community leaders and select members of the Indian business community. The PM Modi-Netanyahu bromance was seen to be carefully choreographed, complete with shots of bear hugs and them walking barefoot together through the Mediterranean surf. "My visit to India is the other one". "I think the relationship is much stronger than one vote in the United Nations", the envoy said. He said the tremendous strengthening of ties on all fronts would in due course "will see a reflection of that more often in the voting of India in global forums".

According to official sources here, the visiting dignitary will arrive in New Delhi on Sunday afternoon and would also visit Teen Murti Haifa Chowk, which has been named after the Israel city of Haifa, as a mark of tribute to the history of India-Israel relations. "It just takes longer on the worldwide front", he stressed. "The visit is an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with a global superpower in the fields of economy, defense, technology and tourism".

"The Prime Minister's visit to India is the grand finale to the celebrations 25 years of growing partnership between India and Israel".

The two sides will sign agreements and also issue a joint press statement.

Again in 1971, Israel helped India during the India-Pakistan war.

Indias Kalyani group and Israels state-run Rafael Advanced Defence Systems had commissioned a Rs 70 crore production facility near Hyderabad in August a year ago, anticipating that the Israeli firm would bag the contract. Earlier this month, Rafael confirmed the cancelation of the deal months after reports about India withdrawing from it surfaced. Netanyahu is going to spend a day in PM Modi's home state on 17 January. From the ashram, the two prime ministers would go to "iCreate", an autonomous centre that mentors budding entrepreneurs and later, the Sabarkantha-based centre of excellence for agriculture. On Tuesday, Netanyahu and his wife will fly to Agra for a visit to the Taj Mahal.

PM Modi had received a rousing welcome during his visit to the Jewish state in July previous year when PM Netanyahu, who referred to the Indian leader as his "dear friend", had received him at the airport and spent the next three days by his side.
