Tamilnadu Transport strike: Madras HC urges striking unions to resume work immediately

TN Assembly session begins; Claiming AIADMK is in minority, DMK, Congress MLAs stage walkout

The strike by the transport workers is on its seventh day.

Chennai: In a bonanza, salaries of Tamil Nadu MLAs are set to be almost doubled with the state government tabling a bill in the state assembly on Wednesday. "At the time of the crisis if this government passes the bill, people will laugh at us".

Centre of Indian Trade Unions leader and president of Tamil Nadu State Transport Employees Federation A Soundararajan and DMK backed Labour Progressive Federation's (LPF) president M Shanmugam said that employees were fighting for their rights, wage revision and payment of arrears amounting to Rs 7,500 crore, but the MLAs were voting themselves a 100% hike in salaries.

The session would also witness sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran making his debut in the Assembly after having won the December 21 Radhakrishnan Nagar bypoll by a thumping margin of 40,000 votes against E Madhusudhanan of AIADMK.

The session began today amid a state-wide transportation strike over revision of wages for workers.

State Department Rolls Out New Travel Advisory Program

Opposing the bill, Dhinakaran asked the Tamil Nadu government how they could double the salary of MLAs when they were unwilling to pay striking bus drivers.

However, the workers, who demand a 2.57-time hike, stepped up their protest and held demonstrations. The employees are in fact set to intensify protests after the state government issued notices to almost 60,000 workers for abstaining from work on 5 and 6 January, reports The Times of India.

Few hours ago, the court urged striking Transport unions to resume to work immediately. "The trade unions are adamant on the strike for political reasons", said Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar on Monday.

Following the strike, the Madras High Court issued orders on January 5 and January 7 demanding that protesters return to work.
