Google's Latest Acquisition Turns Smartphone Screen Into Speakers

Latest Consumer Technology Products On Display At Annual CES In Las Vegas

Google quietly acquired a United Kingdom -based company which turns the surface of devices such as smartphones into speakers with its technology.

According to regulatory filings, the transaction, as a part of which Google's United Kingdom subsidiary bought all the shares of Redux holding company NVF Tech Ltd., was completed in December a year ago.

Redux's technology eliminates the need for small speakers in mobile handsets, making more space available for other components.

Google did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment and clarification about the apparent acquisition. As expected the Redux website is now down and Google is expected to officially announce the acquisition.

With the acquisition, Google now has an extra 178 patents under its belt, which it can use to enhance its future smartphone and other devices - perhaps even future Google Home hardware.

Google Memo Author Sues, Claiming Bias Against White Conservative Men
The lawsuit is being filed by Dhillon Law Group, and former Google engineer David Gudeman is also a member of the suit . That practice is "openly denigrating male and Caucasian employees as less favored than others", the lawsuit claimed.

Redux was founded in 2013 out of Cambridge, and built technology that uses vibrations to turn surfaces of phones or tablets into speakers or provide haptic feedback. However, it is believed the deal went through in August. The sound quality is said to be "decent".

Last year, it received £3.7 million ($5 million) from an array of investors, including Arie Capital. According to its LinkedIn page, Redux has been 78 granted patents, over 50 pending patent applications, and global engagement with leaders in multiple vertical markets, our vision is to bring the next generation of user experience to every consumer.

Some of Redux's tech has already appeared in PCs and vehicle infotainment systems.

Google quietly purchased a United Kingdom firm called Redux sometime past year.

At CES 2018, Google mainly focused on promoting its smart speakers and its new line of Smart Display devices, its direct competitor to the Amazon Echo Show.
