South Korea to unveil decision over 'comfort women' deal with Japan

North Korea's participation in PyeongChang and a rapprochement between the two Koreas could contribute to easing the peninsular tensions that were raised throughout 2017 by Pyongyang's regular ballistic weapons tests and US President Donald Trump's belligerent rhetoric.

This latest thaw was initiated when, in a New Year's speech, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he was willing to have dialogue with South Korea and could send representatives to the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The talks at Panmunjom, the truce village in the Demilitarised Zone that divides the peninsula, will largely focus on the North's participation in next month's Winter Olympics in the South.

Regardless of its narrow, primarily sporting agenda, the meeting will be closely watched by world leaders eager for any sign of a reduction in tensions on the Korean peninsula amid rising fears over North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.' Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

"We will listen to what North Korea will say".

North Korea's official news agency has urged practical action in order to improve ties between the two Koreas in an editorial on Sunday, ahead of the first meeting between the two countries in more than two years.

According to reports, Bach is scheduled to meet Chang Ung, a member of the North Korean Olympic body at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne to discuss North Korea's possible participation in the games. It's not my understanding that they're going to talk about anything further. But North Korea could demand some rewards in exchange for those steps, such as the revival of stalled cooperation projects that are lucrative for the North or the suspensions of annual U.S.

The size and membership of the North Korean delegation and their accommodation - widely expected to be paid for by Seoul - will also be discussed.

Analysts say tensions could flare again after the Olympics, with USA and South Korean troops carrying out their delayed drills, and North Korea likely responding with new weapons tests.

Trump said Saturday he hopes the newly arranged discussions between North and South Korea will go "beyond the Olympics" and promised the United States will take part "at the appropriate time".

The Trump administration has agreed to delay joint military exercises with South Korea until after the Olympics. North Korea's chief negotiator is Ri Son-gwon, chairman of North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland (CPRF), another veteran negotiator who has represented the North at a variety of military talks and both working-level and high-level talks with South Korea.

"I think the political context of why they're doing it now is pretty clear", he said.

On Sunday, North Korea announced a list of five officials who will represent Pyongyang, a day after South Korea confirmed its representatives.
