Prosecutors in pot-friendly states will decide on crackdown

Sen. Lindsey Graham

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The US Justice Department on Thursday (Friday in Manila) reversed official policy that had tolerated the growing state-based movement to legalize marijuana sales, just three days after California formally permitted recreational use of the drug. Ellen and Stu Smith are champions for the use of medical cannabis for chronic pain-and they believed something like this could happen.

Walker said he's committed to upholding the will of Alaska voters, who legalized recreational pot use in 2014.

Back in 2013, as an increasing number of states began to legalize marijuana, Cole released a directive to federal prosecutors that essentially adopted a policy of non-interference with marijuana-friendly state laws. The conflict between state and federal law has been a hot issue at least since 2012, when Colorado and Washington state legalized recreational use of marijuana. And while Sessions' memo does not instruct federal prosecutors to bring more marijuana cases, he could order stricter enforcement in the future.

It's worth noting that the Rohrbacher-Bluemenauer amendment must be approved each year, so it will come up for a vote again this year.

Sen. Dan Sullivan said it contradicts previous statements by President Donald Trump but could be the impetus for Congress to find a permanent solution for states that have chosen to regulate marijuana.

While you probably don't have to worry about getting swept up in a raid by the Drug Enforcement Administration on your way home from the pot shop, according to state officials and pot attorneys, that doesn't mean you can start cutting corners with your basement grow, business plans and pot purchases.

The governor said he expects to meet with the new top prosecutor in Nevada after she arrives.

"It's going to hurt a lot of people if it does slow down, there are just too many people benefiting financially and with their health", said Steve Williams, a marijuana advocate for DFW NORML.

Sessions said the previous guidance "undermines the rule of law".

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has strong words for the Trump administration: "We will not be bullied by an administration that seems obsessed with dismantling things that are actually working", reports CBS.

Patrick McCarthy, spokesman for the NY cannabis association, sidestepped a question on how revocation of the Obama-era memos would affect medical marijuana providers, practitioners and patients.

Gillibrand urged fellow lawmakers to support legislation she proposed that would "keep the federal government out of the way when doctors and patients decide that medical marijuana is the best treatment for them".

Coos County Sherriff Craig Zanni said, "This is now a federal issue related to a change of federal prosecutor's directives".

Sandoval is a moderate Republican and former federal judge who appointed Heller to the Senate in 2011 and talked with Sessions about marijuana policy last April.

In this new memo, Sessions permits US attorneys to seriously enforce federal law - rescinding the Cole memo - in states where marijuana use is both illegal and legal. And for medical marijuana, "it is not likely an efficient use of federal resources to focus enforcement efforts on seriously ill individuals or their individual care givers".
