Amazon Alexa will soon control microwave ovens

Amazon is making it easier to bring Alexa to devices like headphones and smartwatches

However, it already notes that it's making "significant investments" in voice control, including a remote control, a mobile app and already-announced Alexa gear including an air conditioner and dehumidifier. While 2017 has been a banner year for smart speakers in terms of hardware sales, especially for Google and Amazon, smart speakers in 2018 will move beyond hardware, with strategic attempts to monetize the growing installed base in the USA and beyond.

Amazon is being mocked online for the latest update to its smart personal assistant - Alexa can now control microwaves, saving people the mere "micro" seconds it takes to switch on the device after placing your food inside.

Amazon introduced new tools on Thursday that allow kitchen appliance makers to build Alexa, the voice assistant that powers Echo devices, into microwaves and eventually conventional ovens. Now you can build skills to enable customers in the United States to control their microwave ovens using Alexa. "Cooking capabilities will also be available in other countries soon", Amazon has stated.

"Customers are increasingly using voice user interfaces (VUIs) as a hands-free way to manage their lives, and hands-free control is especially valuable when cooking", Amazon's Mike Maas wrote in a blog post.

Commissioner: 16 people hurt in NY fire will be OK
Adults and children fled from the three stories of apartments above, including a man who ran outside with no shirt and no shoes. At least 23 people are injured in a fire that breaks out in a building in the Bronx, New York City, on January 2, 2018.

While Whirlpool's expected to be the first to launch the new Alexa cooking capability for its connected microwaves (no exact date has been given), Amazon also announced Samsung, GE, Kenmore and LG are all working to bring the new Alexa cooking capability to market.

Microwaves are about to get a whole lot smarter, and even more convenient, thanks to Amazon Alexa.

We've seen Alexa integration make its way to a number of smart devices already.

Specifically, when you need to have something heated in the microwave or oven in the future, you could simply say, "Alexa, heat this on high for one minute".
