A North Korean missile crashed into one of its cities previous year

North Korea missile crashes into its own cities Report

A North Korean ballistic missile failed during a test launch, crashing and exploded in a town and causing damage to buildings and unknown casualties, missile experts have claimed.

The missile was launched from North Korea's Pukchang airfield.

The Diplomat's Ankit Panda and David Schmerler, of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, cited a US government source as saying the missile failed a minute into flight and never went higher than 70 kilometers.

The missile's engines reportedly failed after just one minute into the flight, resulting in "catastrophic failure", The Diplomat reported, citing a "U.S. government source with knowledge of North Korea's weapons programs".

The unnamed source pointed out where the rocket had landed and Google Earth images taken on May 18 previous year, just weeks after the launch, appear to show damage to a greenhouse-style structure at the same spot.

However The Diplomat said it was impossible to ascertain whether there was any loss of life.

The missile that reportedly crashed, was a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile that had earlier been test fired twice and had failed on both occasions.

However The Diplomat has revealed the missile crash-landed in the North Korean city of Tokchon causing significant damage to buildings there.

There have been no reported deaths as a result of the apparent stray rocket, but the damaged building is close to heavily populated areas.

The concern over the launch failure comes after North Korea began using alternative sites for missile launches, including Pyongyang's Sunan Airport, which could raise the potential for similar accidents occurring near higher population centers. And there has been times they have done it from heavily populated regions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 (Mars-12) in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 15, 2017.

In the war of words that followed, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened to launch a missile strike on the USA with President Donald Trump then responding in kind, saying that he did not rule a military solution to the conflict. Kim Jong Un even claimed that he has a nuclear button on his desk at all times - prompting US President Donald Trump to hit back saying his nuclear button is bigger.

Tokchon, where the missile landed in April 2017, is seen north of Pyongyang.

Kim Jong Un conducted 16 missile tests since February 2017, firing 23 various missiles.
