Serena Williams Returning to Tennis on Saturday

28 2017 shows Serena Williams of the US posing with the trophy following her victory over Venus Williams of the US in the women's singles final on day 13 of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne

Williams will play an exhibition match against defending French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi as she is set to make her first competitive appearance since she won her record 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open in January.

Williams, who married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian last month, said in a statement that she was "delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi".

World number one Rafael Nadal has pulled out from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, the season-opening exhibition event in Abu Dhabi next week, due to lingering fitness concerns.

"For this reason, I have sadly announced to the organisers and now to you fans that I won't play this time in Abu Dhabi".

She gave birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian in September.

Isaiah Thomas reportedly looking to scrimmage with Canton Charge
The targeted time period is especially notable because the Cavaliers face Irving and the Celtics on January 3 in Boston. The Cavs are scheduled to hold a practice in San Francisco on Christmas Eve.

She gave birth to a daughter, Alexis, in September but is now ready to make her comeback, and will take on surprise French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko at the invitational event in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

New mother Serena Williams is heading back out on the tennis court for her first match since giving birth to her daughter in September.

The 23-time Grand Slam victor will take on a fellow Major victor in the form of Jelena Ostapenko on December 30, who stunned Simona Halep to win the French Open last June.

A win for Williams at next month's Australian Open would take her to 24 grand slam victories and place her alongside all-time leader Margaret Court. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said earlier this month that Williams was " to play in the first Grand Slam of 2018, which begins January 15.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion has not played competitively since his quarter-final loss to Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon because of an elbow injury.
