At least 4 dead after bus crashes into underground passage in Moscow

Nine remain in hospitals after bus ploughs into Moscow pedestrian underpass

A passenger bus swerved off course and drove into a busy pedestrian underpass in Moscow on Monday, killing at least four people, Russian news agencies reported. Their primary version of what happened is a technical malfunction that caused the bus to veer off the road and down the stairway.

Footage shows people scattering as the bus ran down wide steps before being brought to a halt by the tunnel's roof.

"Four persons died and one of them is a child", he said.

Police immediately ruled out the possibility of it being an attack, saying they suspected a mechanical fault or that the driver lost control of the vehicle.

"The driver has been detained". The driver of the bus was taken into custody.

Three people have been hospitalised, the statement added.

Sirens were blaring around the metro station, with authorities preparing to pull the bus out of the underpass with a cable, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.

The tragedy, which unfolded near the Slavyansky Bulvar metro station at 2:50 p.m. local time, also left 15 people injured, officials said. "We are providing emergency aid", he said, offering condolences to families of the victims.

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin told reporters at the scene that an inspection of the entire Moscow bus fleet has been ordered.
