Miss America bosses quit over emails mocking past winners

Exclusive: President Of Miss America Organization Resigns Amid Scandal

Randle's resignation comes amid a storm of controversy surrounding the Miss America Organization less than 48 hours after HuffPost published a story revealing that emails, mostly sent by Miss America Organization CEO Sam Haskell, contained misogynistic language, slut shaming and fat shaming.

Savvy Shields, a student at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville who won the Miss America Pageant in 2016, was the most recent victor to add her name to the letter.

Dan Meyers, interim chairman of the Miss America Organization's board of directors, confirmed in a statement via Twitter that the board on Saturday afternoon accepted Haskell's resignation, "effective immediately".

Along with Haskell, board chair Lynn Weidner also resigned, though she is remaining on the board for 90 days to aid in the leadership transition.

"The leaders of this organization cannot degrade the values that Miss America represents", Shields wrote.

Race for Virginia state house now tied, victor to be randomly selected
The ballot appeared to fill in circles next to both Simonds' and Yancey names - but Simonds' circle had a slash through it. A recount is set begin for a Virginia House of Delegates race that could alter the power dynamic in Richmond.

A pair of former Miss Americas from Arkansas are among 49 winners of the pageant who signed an open letter calling for a change in leadership after emails surfaced showing organization officials attacking and disparaging former winners.

In separate statements, the Miss America board confirmed the resignations of Randle, who became president in May and at 29 was the youngest to hold that position with the organization, as well as Haskell and Weidner. Dick Clark Productions told the AP on Thursday that it cut ties with the Miss America Organization over the emails, calling them "appalling". That same former title holder, Mallory Hagan, also was ridiculed over a bathing suit photo in which she appeared to have gained weight from when she competed in and won the pageant.

The emails were leaked to the Huffington Post, which first reported on them Thursday.

And New Jersey officials are reviewing their Miss America Organization contract, in which the state still owes $4 million toward the cost of next year's pageant.

Haskell and been suspended the previous day by the organization, which said it would conduct an "in-depth investigation into alleged inappropriate communications and the nature in which they were obtained".
