Vince McMahon has sold his shares in the WWE

Last week, a rumor had started making the rounds that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was aiming to revive the XFL, the rebel football league he started with NBC that only lasted for one whole season back in 2001.

Vince McMahon sold 3.34 million shares of WWE stock this week to fund his Alpha Entertainment, LLC, which appears to be the company that will oversee the return of the XFL football organization that failed many years ago.

It is unclear what this means for WWE, though, given McMahon already spends nearly all of his time on running the company.

The filings seek to trademark the XFL as a professional football league and also cover merchandise related to the league. Speculation now turns to whether this is the right time for the XFL to return and if McMahon is about to lose even more money this time around.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the company also sought to trademark "URFL", furthering the belief that McMahon is plotting on an alternative football league.

He said the gunmen, who launched their assault with a auto bomb and rocket-propelled grenades, appear to have been wearing police uniforms.

President Donald Trump is a longtime McMahon family friend and many people are speculating that the new organization would have the full backing of Trump, especially given his less than supportive tweets aimed at the National Football League the past few months.

"On December 21, 2017, Vincent K. McMahon ("Mr. McMahon"), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc". WWE did not deny the possible return of the XFL.

That's the speculation, at least, and McMahon has gone a long way toward throwing fuel on that speculative fire with a recent move he made to sell 3.34 millions shares of his stock in WWE, which equals about $100 million, per ESPN.

McMahon's sale represents ~4.3% of the company's total outstanding Class A and Class B common stock.
