A report from the Daily Caller says that NBC has confirmed that a female staffer accused Matthews of sexual harassment in 1999 and the network settled with her as a result of those accusations. The rep said the network paid a lesser amount to the woman as severance pay when she left the network.

The Daily Caller, citing two sources familiar with the situation, reported on Saturday that the unidentified woman was paid $40,000 after making a sexual harassment complaint against Matthews while working as an assistant producer on his show, "Hardball With Chris Matthews".

An MSNBC spokesman told The Daily Caller that Matthews received a formal reprimand when the woman made the complaint against him.

Network executives concluded Matthews made an inappropriate remark, but didn't find it to be a direct proposition.

MSNBC refused to divulge whether the victim's severance compensation was related the incident or whether this was the only claim lodged against Matthews.

Representatives for Matthews, 72, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

An NBC spokesperson said Matthews' comments were deemed inappropriate, but were not sexual propositions.

MSNBC host and political analyst Chris Matthews is the latest in a string of high-profile men in media to be accused of sexual misconduct, particularly at NBC.

Matthews, whose show was later taken over by MSNBC where it still runs, was reprimanded for the inappropriate statements.

Based on this initial report, the accusations against Matthews are far less egregious than the ones against his NBC colleagues Mark Halperin and Matt Lauer.

In April, political talk show host Bill O'Reilly left Fox News after the New York Times reported he and his employer made payouts totaling about $13 million to five women to settle claims of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior.
