Why Apple is putting $400 million into lasers

Apple invests $390 million in US-made iPhone lasers

Apple announced that it would invest $390 million (Rs. 2,513 crores approx.) in Finisar that it will use to build a plant in Sherman, Texas to make chips that will enhance many iPhone features such as Face ID, Animojis, and Portrait-mode selfies. The cash injection comes from Apple's $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund that was launched earlier this year as a way to support "a new era of technology-driven manufacturing in the USA". Corning got a $200 million investment from Apple.

The money Apple is investing in Finisar will also be used to open up a plant in Sherman, Texas. It will also lead to more VCSELs for Apple in the latter half of 2018, helping to protect Apple against potential shortages from its leading VCSEL supplier, Lumentum. The company is anticipated to add 500 high-skilled workers at a formerly shuttered plant in Sherman, bringing the payroll for the Sherman plant and another plant in Allen, Texas to $65 million. Face ID also seems to be the authentication mechanism set to be standardized across all of Apple's devices in future that now features Touch ID.

Shares of Finisar rival Lumentum Holdings Inc fell 12 percent to $45.80, which Henderson said validates how important 3D sensing technology is to Apple and other vendors. This quarter alone, Apple will apparently purchase 10 times more VCSEL wafers than were previously manufactured worldwide over a similar time period.

Sherman mayor David Plyler said: "Sherman is the ideal place for Finisar's significant investment in their operations and facilities and we couldn't be more grateful for their confidence". Analysts believe Apple's deal with Finisar means it will be entitled to the production capacity that results. The iPhone X is now the only Apple product with a facial recognition sensor.

Conor McGregor Fight With Manny Pacquiao In The Works
Speaking to AFP about the possibility of meeting McGregor in the ring, Pacquiao said: "If we can negotiate it, I have no problem". And the UFC boss even joked that if the 38-year-old was talking to his fighter then he was ready to sue him.

Apple released tools for app makers to start creating AR apps over the summer and enabled it on all iPhones back to the iPhone 6s.

Face ID uses infrared to scan your face, so it works in low lighting conditions and in the dark.

Five unsuccessful attempts at Face ID will force you to enter a passcode - which you'll need anyway just to set up facial recognition.

Face ID also adapts to changes in your appearance over time, so it will continue to recognize you as you grow a beard or grow your hair longer.
