Senate confirms Nielsen to head Homeland Security

Nielsen served as John Kelly's principal deputy chief of staff and was also his chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security.

Kirstjen Nielsen was confirmed by the Senate to take over as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

"Fortunately, when Ms. Nielsen served under Secretary Kelly, she witnessed firsthand how quickly and dramatically morale can be improved within DHS by providing its workforce the authority and support they need to perform the tasks they were hired to do", Johnson said.

Democrats complained that Nielsen lacks the experience needed to run a major agency with 240,000 employees.

While Nielsen reportedly "waffled", ultimately not leaving her post as the DHS chief of staff at the time, the role would have effectively made her the head of cyber operations for the agency. The top position at the DHS has remained open since Kelly left to join the White House as chief of staff in late July.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), who voted against the nomination, cautioned that Nielsen "failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady, experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs". Nielsen said the federal government should adjust its modeling and preparation for dealing with weather events related to climate changes, but refused to acknowledge the alleged human contributions to those changes.

Direct, which now opens to the camera in a similar way as to how the other social media photo-based platform Snapchat does. And swiping left will reveal your recent chats (Direct Inbox) similar to what you see now in your Instagram app.

Elaine Duke had been serving as acting secretary since Kelly stepped down.

On other topics, Nielsen said she agreed with Kelly that a U.S. -Mexico border wall is unlikely to be a physical barrier from "sea to shining sea". Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in November that recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would not be a priority for deportation in her department.

Nielsen, who served on former President George W. Bush's homeland security council, also appears to be facing opposition from the far-right nationalist wing of the Republican party.

We have not seen any report about Nielsen's views on the Trump administration's position on whether "Dreamers", as those who qualified for USA residency under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are often called, should be allowed to stay in the United States. However, Dougherty's statement on October 3 indicated that the administration's termination of DACA was not as thorough as most people were led to believe.

Nielsen served at DHS as chief of staff under former head John Kelly in the early days of the Trump administration.
