Crew Saw DPRK Missile Test on Cathay Pacific Flight from HK

Why North Korea Sanctions are Failing in Africa

Civic Party's Tam said although Cathay Pacific claimed its nearest aircraft was several hundred miles away, or more than half an hour's flight, from the explosion, the threat cannot be ruled out, especially if North Korea does not announce its missile launches.

The carrier said its planes now don't enter "the vicinity of the missile trajectory", because it changed the route to avoid the northern part of the Sea of Japan, which sits between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

The Hong Kong based airline sent out a staff note earlier this week sharing the communications from the cockpit, with the crew saying "we witnessed the DPRK missile blow up and fall apart near our current location".

The airline said that, following the July 27 missile launch into the Sea of Japan by Pyongyang, its Seoul to Los Angeles flight routes have been altered.

North Korea's new missile was reportedly a new type of nuclear-capable ICBM called the Hwasong-15.

Lawmaker proposes during Australian same-sex marriage debate
The final legislative victory follows years of activism and a three-month community campaign by the Equality Campaign. Same-sex marriage will now be legal across Australia after the country's Parliament voted to allow it.

Described by Pyongyang as its "most powerful" missile, the 29 November launch ended up in Japanese waters but flew higher than any other the North had previously tested.

As a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the North is obliged to give prior notice of any actions that could threaten the safety of civilian aircraft.

Federal regulation from 1997 prohibits all US airlines from flying over the Flight Information Region of Pyongyang.

Korean Air pilots on two different planes also reported seeing flashes of light believed to be the North Korean missile when they were flying over Japan, airline spokesman Cho Hyun-mook said.

Travelers who are concerned should know the chances of an airplane colliding with a missile are extremely low: One safety analyst estimates that it is less than a billion to one.
