Impeachment effort quashed by House Republicans and Democrats

Democrat intends to force impeachment vote against Donald Trump

Democratic leaders have previously warned party members against enacting articles of impeachment against Trump, arguing that such a move would be premature given the ongoing investigations into the former NY businessman's election campaign and administration.

Green argued that Trump has committed a high misdeed and is unfit to be president and warrants impeachment, trial and removal from office.

Green's long-shot move in the in the Republican-led House quickly faltered.

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) said on Tuesday that he will bring the articles to the floor for a vote on Wednesday, adding that prominent Democratic leaders have asked to meet with him to discuss the bill. The vote was not on the articles of impeachment themselves but on tabling the proposal.

At least a handful of fellow Democrats may vote for Green's resolution.

House GOP leaders are expected to reject the measure, but Green can still force a procedural vote that will effectively serve as the first vote in Congress on impeaching Trump.

Houthi fighters kill Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh
A mortar shell also struck the Sana'a International Airport today amid increasing clashes between the Houthis and Saleh loyalists. The exact circumstances of his death could not be immediately confirmed.

Green's resolution is expected to fail, given widespread opposition among Republicans and most Democrats.

As examples, Green's articles of impeachment cite Trump's equivocating response to the violence from a white supremacist march in Charlottesville, Va., in August, as well as his attacks on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. Green also charges Trump with "sowing discord" among the American people.

Shortly before the vote, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said there are "legitimate questions" raised about Trump's fitness to lead the country. The leaders said Congressional inquiries and Robert Mueller's investigation into connections between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation should be allowed to continue.

"We ought to let Mr. Mueller complete his full investigation rather than engage in what would essentially be a public relations stunt", said Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich).

Texas Rep. Al Green says he will present articles of impeachment Wednesday under a rule requiring the House to vote on the issue within two days.
