It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with one-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Code.org also celebrated new pledges from states, school districts and organizations to expand access to computer science education.

To help promote a strong workforce to make sure North Carolina is prepared for the jobs of today and tomorrow, Governor Roy Cooper has declared December 4-10, 2017, Computer Science Education Week. Instead, they need to learn how computer software works, so that they will be able to develop their own programmes and apps in the future.

Hadi Partovi told VentureBeat in a phone interview that the nonprofit suggests states take three steps to increase students' access to computer science classes.

In the past, computer science and the ability to write code was considered something only tech-nerds, hackers and residents of Silicon Valley would have any use for, but those stereotypes are finally changing. The initiative was initially launched in the USA to "demystify the art of coding" and expand student participation in computer science.

The Hour of Code is a national initiative to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming, created to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Beyond the workshops, kids from kindergarten and up can check out these one-hour, self-guided coding tutorials.

Microsoft will host two Hour of Code events with Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS).

High School Computer Science teacher, Mark Ives believes the provinces schools are doing well when it comes to teaching tech trades like coding but admits more could be done, and has to be done, "It's definitely a need it's something we have to do or we'll be falling behind". Schools and companies across New Mexico will be hosting and participating in Hour of Code events.

"If only 1 percent of the girls actively learning on Code.org continued past high school, they'd outnumber the gender gap in university CS", Partovi said.

So far, more than 2,300 students and 100 teachers statewide have been actively participating in the Cyber Robotics Coding Competition.
