Trouble mounts for Delhi's Max Hospital

Max Healthcare authorities had ordered an inquiry into the

A similar incident was reported from Safdarjung Hospital in June when a newborn was found alive even though the doctors had declared him dead.

Two Indian physicians have lost their jobs after a baby they declared dead last week was found to be alive shortly not long before he was supposed to be buried.

In its atatement, the hospital said, "While the inquiry by the expert group which includes external experts from IMA is still in process, we have chose to terminate the services of the two treating doctors, Dr AP Mehta and Dr Vishal Gupta in the case relating to the twin extreme pre-term babies".

Max Healthcare said in a statement released late Sunday evening that the decision to let the two doctors go should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

The parents were on their way to a cremation ground when they noticed "some movements" inside one of the polythene bags that the hospital gave them with the babies' bodies. "I was shocked. I couldn't believe my eyes", Praveen Malik, the twin's grandfather, told CNN.

The boy, who has been given the name Champ, is on life support at a Delhi nursing home.

What we didn't have was a conversation with players in the coalition based on some of the responses that we got from the league.

Police officers said the focus of the questioning was to find out the specific duties of each member of the medical team at the time of the incident, seek justification for three expensive injections and a Rs 50-lakh bill that was quoted to the family.

"We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident", the hospital said.

Meanwhile, Delhi police investigating the case have asked hospital authorities to present themselves in the police station. "We don't trust the doctors there", Malik said.

According to local media, they rushed the newborn to a nearby hospital where they found that the baby boy was alive and is now being treated at a nursing home in New Delhi.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain on Saturday said if the Max hospital continued with the negligence, the state government would cancel their licence.
