Turkey: 1st lady stresses ending violence against women

25 Nov 2017- 18:53:00

"Intimate partner abuse, workplace sexual harassment, sexist jokes and even sexual assaults are played down and minimized".

If these statistics don't spur you to take action against violence against women, then one can only wonder what will.

The 16 days of activism encompass other significant dates: International Women Human Rights Defenders Day on November 29, World AIDS Day on December 1, and December 6: The National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence Against Women, which commemorates the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre at l'École Polytechnique in 1989. The European Union and the United Nations launched the Spotlight Initiative to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls. Considering the ever-growing harassment of women, the United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

"Violence against women and girls is not inevitable", said Rebecca Tavares, Country Representative ad interim for the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

Nearly half of the women who were killed in 2012 were killed by either partners or family members, compared to 6% of men.

According to the protest organisers, 61 femicides have been recorded in the country so far this year, in addition to the 36 women who have committed suicide.

Three militants and an Indian soldier were killed on Tuesday in northern Jammu Kashmir, Indian forces in the region said. Separately, the Army and police launched a joint operation in the forests of Zirhama, 11 km from Kupwara town.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Turkey's first lady Emine Erdogan on Saturday said that Turkey will continue its efforts to combat violence against women.

"There is an increasing recognition that violence against women is a major barrier to the fulfillment of human rights, and a direct challenge to women's inclusion and participation in sustainable development and sustaining peace", said Guterres.

The research, released Friday, said violence against health-care workers is pervasive within the walls of hospitals across Ontario.

Calling such violence a human rights violation, he said men need to hold themselves and their peers accountable for behaviour that threatens women's respect, protection and freedom.

While this violence continues, the worldwide community will not achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a master plan to end poverty and save the planet, adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
