Robinho given prison sentence in Italy for 2013 sexual assault

Robinho has been handed a nine-year jail sentence by a court in Milan

With AP Photos.Former AC Milan and Real Madrid striker Robinho was sentenced to nine years in jail by a court in Milan on charges of sexual assault following an incident in 2013, Italian news agency ANSA reported Thursday.

The 33-year old player is currently now playing in his homeland with Atletico Minero.

'I clarify that my client has already defended himself against the charges and maintains he played no part in the incident.

Robinho was found guilty of assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013, when he played for AC Milan.

Because of that, the verdict is effectively put on hold until the appeals process is completed and no sentence will be enforced until then.

"All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance".

Prior to that, Robinho spent two years at Manchester City between 2008 and 2010 where he made 41 Premier League appearances, scoring 14 domestic goals for the club. After a brief stay at Chinese team, Guangzhou Evergrande, he joined Atletico Mineiro previous year.
