European researchers claim to have identified North Korea's list of targets

North Korea Blasts US Terrorism Blacklisting

But a symbolic hostile gesture is still a hostile gesture, and analysts are warning that this move is likely to do further harm to any efforts to get negotiations with North Korea started, as it will encourage North Korea to retaliate with some move, and the United States will be even less willing to be seen communicating with "terrorists".

North Korea responded on Wednesday to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to relist the county as a state sponsor of terrorism, calling it a "grave provocation and aggressive violation", North Korean state media reported.

Such a decision had been largely expected in view of the recent case of Otto Wambier, an American college student who died after 17 months of detention in North Korea, and the apparent assassination of a half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a Malaysian airport in February this year. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said during his recent trip to Asia that the US and China were seeing "clear signs" that sanctions are creating "some stress" for North Korea's economy, citizens and even military. The spokesperson noted that their actions included expulsion of North Korean workers and diplomats.

Few expect that the Kim regime will easily give in to outside pressure.

"[We] strongly rejected the unilateral and arbitrary lists and designations established by the US government which serve as a basis for the implementation of coercive measures which are contrary to worldwide law", Parrilla said in a statement. In recent months, Trump has threatened North Korea with "total destruction" if it refuses to curb its nuclear missile program while simultaneously escalating tensions between the USA and North Korea with bombastic name-calling.

Trump warned that the terror designation and sanctions announcement would be part of a series of moves over the next two weeks to reinforce his "maximum pressure campaign" against Kim Jong-Un's regime.

In the country's first public response to its return to the American blacklist, the official Korean Central News Agency said North Korea has no connection to terrorism and does not care "whether the USA puts a cap of "terrorism" on us or not".

Experts say the US decision to put North Korea back on its terrorism blacklist will have limited practical effect, but may make a diplomatic solution of the standoff over its nuclear weapons program more hard.
