MS-13 Members Stabbed Maryland Man, Decapitated Him, Tore Out Heart

Police: MS-13 gang member arrested for murder; victim stabbed over 100 times

The victim's body was found in a grave September 5 in Wheaton Regional Park, according to Montgomery County Police.

He's since been extradited to Maryland and has a bond review slated for Wednesday afternoon.

An informant told detectives about the killing in September. According to charging documents, a member of the MS-13 gang told police that he and nine other gang members "had planned for approximately two weeks to lure the victim from the Annapolis area with the goal of killing him and disposing his body in the wooded area of the park".

Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, 19, was arrested on November 11 in North Carolina.

Montgomery County's State's Attorney John McCarthy has said MS-13 has been implicated in up to 18 murders over the past two years in Montgomery County.

Police wrote in court records that they think Lopez-Abrego was the first attacker to stab the victim in the chest with a 15-inch knife.

The documents allege that Lopez-Abrego helped dig the grave where the victim was found, and also used a walkie-talkie to alert the other gang members to the victim's arrival.

They could not find Lopez-Abrego again after that interview.

Investigators are still trying to identify the victim, but he is thought to be a Hispanic male.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department, the crime was planned for a few weeks.

In court documents, detectives describe learning of his body through a yet-unnamed informant in MS-13, an worldwide criminal gang with a presence in the county and the region.

The charging documents reportedly did not detail a motive.

Lopez-Abrego did not speak during the court appearance.

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement tells the Washington Post they've lodged a detainer for Lopez-Abrego, who they say is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.

Because of unrest in Central America, numerous original gang members had guerrilla warfare experience, making them more deadly than other criminal groups. But that wasn't enough of a message to send for MS-13, who also removed his heart from his chest.
