Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai doubts ruling party ability

What’s Happening In Zimbabwe

National's Foreign Affairs spokesman says he can't see President Robert Mugabe rule lasting very long.

Zanu-PF said it backs impeachment and proceedings could begin as soon as Tuesday when Parliament meets, the BBC reported.

The differing roles of the military, Zanu-PF and broader civil society are complicated by the fact that some members of the ruling party are arguing against a broad political coalition in the post-Mugabe era.

In a televised address late Sunday, the 93-year-old veteran leader defied expectations he would quit, pitching the country into a second week of political crisis.

He stunned Zimbabweans in the rambling address by avoiding any mention of resignation.

On Sunday, the Zanu PF central committee met in the capital and recalled Mugabe, replacing him with Mnangagwa as party leader and presidential candidate for next year's elections. "The whole party is going to support the cause", Matuke said.

"Your time is up", said war veterans' leader Chris Mutsvangwa.

"I expect that the impeachment proceedings will now commence", he said.

Having been sacked by his party, Mugabe has run out of options but appears to be steadfastly clinging to the very last vestiges of power.

There has been speculation that he read the wrong speech in his live television address on Sunday or skipped over passages about standing down.

"The deep state that engineered this change of leadership will remain, thwarting any real democratic reform", said Miles Tendi, a Zimbabwean academic at Oxford University. This is especially so if your target is a stubborn old man, with a law degree to his name and your goal, as the organisers of last week's military takeover have stated, is to remain within the confines of a constitution created to protect the president from arbitrary removal.

Watchdog group Veritas says the process will need at least several days to complete, since all there must be a day's notice before any motion is debated.

Former vice president Joyce Mujuru, one of the people expelled in 2014, who has since formed a party, was not reinstated.

Lawmakers from his ruling ZANU-PF party said that they would take the first steps on Tuesday to force Mugabe from office after he ignored their ultimatum to resign.

According to the constitution, if President Mugabe is impeached, a vice-president takes over as acting president.

Emmerson Mnangagwa's dismissal as vice president last week sparked the military's takeover.

Today, Zimbabwe is on the threshold of a new beginning, but before we could get carried away in the prevailing euphoria that comes with Mugabe's cathartic fall, we must ask and agree among ourselves the sort of future we would want to see.

Robert Mugabe seemed almost untouchable for much of his nearly four-decade rule. It is not a one day or two day process, it can go for months and can also involve the courts if the person you are impeaching wants to take advantage of a number of rights that are in the constitution.
