Noise debunked as coming from missing Argentinian submarine

Argentina Missing sub could be out of oxygen soon

An Argentine navy submarine that's been missing for almost a week may soon run out of oxygen if it hasn't surfaced, the country's navy says - a scenario giving urgency to a multinational search for the vessel and its 44-member crew.

URC sailors will join the Navy's P-8A Poseidon maritime aircraft and a NASA research aircraft, both already aiding in the ongoing search efforts near the submarine's last known location.

ARA San Juan soon lost its communication while traversing from an Ushia, Argentina base to its Mar del Plata home base.

Naval spokesperson, Captain Gabriel Galeazzi, said on Tuesday the search is now happening over "480,000 square kilometers".

The last confirmed contact with the submarine was Wednesday, the Argentine navy said.

Speaking at a forum on open government in Buenos Aires, Argentina's President Mauricio Macri said that "in these hard hours, I did not want to start without sending once again all my support to the families of the crew of the ARA San Juan submarine".

On Monday, Argentina's navy said that the noises which they hoped were coming from tools being banged against the hull of a submarine in Morse code signals have been analyzed.

U.S. sues to stop AT&T buying Time Warner, says would hike rates
AT&T owns nationwide satellite provider DirecTV; Time Warner's channels also include TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and HBO. The move may be a pointer that the Trump administration will look closely at other big merger deals.

However, Argentina's navy will take advantage of better weather conditions Tuesday and continue searching for the submarine.

The U.S. Navy is also contributing unmanned underwater vehicles, which can deploy quickly and search a wide area of the ocean using sonar technology. The navy did not give details of its content.

Hope had also been raised earlier by reports that a satellite company recorded seven call attempts, but the navy determined they were not made by the submarine. But a storm pitching powerful winds and waves more than 20 feet high has disrupted visibility and movement in the area, hindering the search for the submarine over the weekend.

Under normal circumstances, the vessel has sufficient fuel, water, oil and oxygen to operate for weeks without external help, Balbi said, and the vessel could "snorkel" - or raise a tube to the surface - "to charge batteries and draw fresh air for the crew". After that, he said, it would have to surface or get near the surface to replenish air supply.

A huge search and rescue operation is continuing in the South Atlantic. "We welcome the help we have received to find them".

Rescue teams from Argentina, the United States, Britain, Chile and Brazil have joined the search effort.
