Iranian Man Charged In HBO Hack That Released 'Game Of Thrones' Script

Prosecutors say Behzad Mesri stole unreleased episodes of popular television shows and then sought to extort HBO

According to the indictment, Mesri launched a campaign this past May to gain access to the entertainment giant's servers through employee user accounts and got his hands on new episodes of shows, including "Ballers", "Room 104" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm", as well as scripts for "Game of Thrones".

He also was able to obtain full scripts and cast lists for 'Game of Thrones, ' only two episodes of which had been released at that point.

Joon Kim, acting USA attorney for the Southern District of New York, and William Sweeney, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI's New York Office, will discuss the case at Tuesday's press conference.

The Justice Department on Tuesday charged an Iranian national with hacking into HBO, as well as attempting to extort the television network for $6 million worth of bitcoin, according to an indictment filed Tuesday in the US District Court in Manhattan. Yes it's true! HBO is hacked!.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY plans to hold a press conference at 12:30 p.m. regarding its case of Behzad Mesri, who is accused of stealing 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO servers earlier this year.

AMAs 2017 - Who dressed the best on the red carpet?
In the show's 45-year history, Ross has won seven awards and performed countless times. Kelly Clarkson , whooping it up in the audience, looked especially entertained.

Acting US Attorney Joon Kim said at a news conference that Mesri was in Iran. "The memory of American law enforcement is very long".

They also said he was a member of the Iranian-based Turk Black Hat Security hacking group, targeting hundreds of websites in the United States and around the world.

Some of the material Mesri is alleged to have leaked included the HBO logo with an image of Game of Thrones Winter King superimposed over it, with the words "Winter is Coming".

One of those targets was reportedly HBO. In July, authorities say he contacted HBO executives via email, demanding $5.5 million in Bitcoin if the company wanted to prevent any leaks.

At the time, HBO said of the extortion scheme, "That's a game we're not going to participate in". We can only guess that he will not be rushing to turn himself in, and if his alleged past work with the Iranian government is true, we don't think the authorities there will be to eager to see him in a USA courtroom.
