George Clooney to Return to Television With Catch-22 Limited Series

Adrianne Palicki Seth MacFarlane The Orville

You can miss Catch-22, but if you do, George Clooney won't be happy.

Clooney will direct and star in the six-episode series, based on United States author Joseph Heller's darkly comedic 1961 novel Catch-22, for Viacom Inc's Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, shooting in early 2018, the studio said.

The show has been written and produced by Luke Davies, who wrote the award-winning drama Lion, and David Michod, the Australian indie sensation who directed The Rover and Animal Kingdom.

For those who don't remember writing reports on Joseph Heller's book, Catch-22 is set in Italy during World War II.

Catch-22 tells the story of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier who challenges the bureaucratic rule known as catch-22, a paradoxical requirement that makes it almost impossible to be relieved from duty. He is in a tough situation because he hates embarking on risky combat missions but can't be relieved from duty because of the frustrating Catch-22 rule.

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content are reportedly partnering to produce the limited run series, and expect to begin production in 2018. Alan Arkin played the film's lead role, while Martin Balsam portrayed Cathcart. And then there's the infamous "catch-22": a series of paradoxical Air Force regulations that make it essentially impossible for pilots to be declared mentally unfit to fly.
