Danica finishing career in the Indy 500 is fitting, says IMS president

Danica Patrick

Danica Patrick is finishing up her last full-time NASCAR season and will finish her career as a driver next year.

Patrick would not reveal who she will drive for in either race next year, but the Indianapolis contender would be Chip Ganassi Racing.

Patrick, 35, told media in Homestead today that this is her final season as a fulltime racer but that she aims to compete in February's Daytona 500 and May's 102 Indianapolis 500.

"I don't feel like I was necessarily pushed into this". I feel like this is where my life should be headed, and sometimes we just get kind of nudged there.

"But I'm not totally done. I think it's [racing in the Indy 500 and Daytona 500] going to be a great way to cap it off".

Patrick was an IndyCar driver before transitioning into stock-car driving.

"I don't care if you remember me as a girl", Patrick said after wiping away tears at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday. But I definitely was faced with situations at the beginning of the year that I'd never faced before. "But it made me think about things, and so I'm excited about the next phase, trust me". SHR replaced her with Aric Almirola. Her highest finish was third in 2009, and she was the first woman to lead laps in the race when she paced the field for 19 trips around the Brickyard as a rookie.

Despite never winning a race in her Monster Energy Cup Series career, Patrick achieved multiple milestones to cement her place in the sport's history. Her best finish in a NASCAR race was when she placed sixth in Atlanta in 2014.

Her biggest success in NASCAR came in 2013 when she grabbed the Daytona 500 pole.

"It's super competitive", Patrick said. "My plan is to be at Indy, and then I'm done". It's 40 cars instead of 20, basically. I tried every approach I could to figure out how to make the auto go fast. "It would be really cool to see her face on the Borg-Warner Trophy, if she can pull that off".
