TransCanada Keystone pipeline leaks 795000 litres of crude oil in South Dakota

Crews cleaning up Keystone Pipeline leak in Marshall County

"TransCanada (TSX, NYSE: TRP) crews safely shut down its Keystone pipeline at approximately 6 a.m. CST (5 a.m. MST) after a drop in pressure was detected in its operating system resulting from an oil leak that is under investigation", TransCanada said in a statement shortly after the spill.

Crews are responding to an oil spill along the Keystone pipeline route in Amherst, South Dakota, according to TransCanada, the company that operates the pipeline. The cause was being investigated. It runs from Hardesty, Alberta, to Cushing, Okla., and Wood River/Patoka, Ill.

"We've always said it's not a question of whether a pipeline will spill, but when, and today TransCanada is making our case for us", said campaign director Kelly Martin.

Dream Chaser space plane successfully completes test flight
It is being created to land on runways and then allow crews to access the materials flown back to Earth soon after landing. Dream Chaser, which looks like a smaller version of the Space Shuttle, would initially be launched on an Atlas V rocket.

In April 2016, there was a 400-barrel release - or 16,800 gallons - with the majority of the oil cleanup completed in two months, Walsh said.

The company says that it is providing state and federal regulators "with accurate and confirmed information on an ongoing basis".

The Keystone pipeline has leaked in South Dakota before, as recently as last spring. This northern leg has been closed, said the company, but the southern leg of the system from Cushing to the Gulf Coast remains operational. One of those leaks happened in southeastern North Dakota in May 2011, when 14,000 gallons spilled after a valve failed at a pumping station near the South Dakota border. Soon after Donald Trump became president, he signed memoranda to expedite the environmental review process for Keystone XL. Based on the safety record of Keystone I, Nebraska's PSC should carefully consider the impacts of TransCanada's much larger Keystone XL pipeline as it weighs its decision on Monday. The project has received needed approvals in states between Alberta, Canada, and Nebraska.
