'F*** TRUMP' bumper sticker leads to free speech debate

Karen Fonseca

The controversy began when Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls posted a now-deleted photo of the truck on Facebook, saying he wanted to speak to the driver and bringing up the idea of a possible disorderly conduct charge.

The controversial sign in question reads, "F (expletive) Trump and f (expletive) you for voting for him".

Nehls wrote that he has received "numerous calls regarding the offensive display". "I simply want to talk to the owner and say, 'Look, the last thing we need to do is have anyone have any confrontation over the language on your truck.' We have not threatened anybody with arrest".

KTRK reports Nehls said during a news conference that he had no regrets about the Facebook post.

Nehls was seeking the owner of the truck, hoping to work out an agreement to modify the display in lieu of disorderly conduct charges.

More people in Fort Bend voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton over Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 election, records show.

Fonseca told the newspaper she and her husband were just exercising their freedom of speech and did not plan to remove the sticker. "They smile. They stop you". ABC13 first tracked down the driver of the pickup truck.

Though Fonseca has been confronted about the sticker, she says it's never caused too big of an issue.

"This is nothing", she said. "They honk their horn, they give you a thumbs up, there is some negativity because we're in a diversified community, but the pluses outweigh the negativity".

A profane anti-Trump sticker is drawing outrage from a Texas community and its sheriff, who wants a couple to change the sticker on their truck so it doesn't contain obscenities.

Social media commenters nearly immediately took issue with the local lawman's assessment, suggesting that Nehls could infringe on the driver's free speech. "I think this is more a problem with political speech than actual language".

Another commenter, Linzi Bee, wrote, "I've seen this truck, and I would (be) pleased if the owner of this vehicle was prosecuted for disorderly conduct".

"I understand I have 12 children of our own, at the same time, what we have on the back of our truck is nothing compared to what you see every day on the music videos, see on TV and video games".

"According to the case, the Supreme Court overturned a conviction for the crime of disturbing the peace for wearing a jacket in the courtroom that displayed the phrase "F*** the draft".
