Nationals' Max Scherzer beats Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw for NL Cy Young

Indians' Corey Kluber named American League Cy Young Award winner

Wednesday night, Major League Baseball and the BBWAA announced Indians ace Corey Kluber has won the 2017 AL Cy Young, with Red Sox lefty Chris Sale placing second.

Scherzer finished first in the league in strikeouts (268) and batting average against (.176), and second in ERA (2.51) and strikeouts per nine innings (12.02). A three-time Cy Young Award victor, he has finished in the top five in each of the last seven seasons.

Kluber has received Cy Young votes in each of the past four seasons, finished in the top three in three of the past four and won the award in two of the last four. Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw finished second in the 2017 NL Cy Young voted while Scherzer's teammate Stephen Strasburg finished third.

Workload was a separator for Scherzer, as Kershaw and Strasburg had been limited by injury to 175 and 175 1/3 innings pitched, respectively. Although Kluber surrendered six home runs, he allowed only 10 earned runs and 23 hits. The Boston ace's ERA in August and September was 4.09, tied for 54th among 97 pitchers with at least 50 innings. Both took losses in the decisive fifth game of a division series, at home, to end their season - Kluber as a starter, Scherzer in relief. Greg Maddux (1992-95) and Randy Johnson (1999-2002) each won four years in a row. Kluber won 28 of 30 first-place votes, with Sale gathered two first-place votes and 28 votes for second place. Of Kluber's 107 pitches, 73 found the strike zone. Severino, who struggled mightily in 2016, bounced back to post a 2.98 ERA and strike out 230 hitters over 193.1 innings.
