Escaped mental patient is in Northern California

Missing State Hospital patient left Maui on flight, police say

There's a massive, multi-agency manhunt underway for Randall Saito, the 59-year-old Hawaii State Hospital escapee who grabbed a cab from the Kaneohe facility on Sunday morning, jumped on a charter plane to Maui, then boarded a Hawaiian Airlines flight to San Jose, Calif.

Saito was committed to Hawaii State Hospital in 1981 after being found not guilty for reason of insanity for the murder of 29-year-old Sandra Yamashiro. He was acquitted of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity and committed to the hospital.

In 1981, his attorney did not contest Saito's committal, saying he was unsafe and "intends to do it again".

Security officers at San Jose International Airport, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service, reviewed surveillance footage from the airport, airport spokesman Jon Vaden told ABC News.

Hawaii State Hospital Administrator William May said officials are fully cooperating with law enforcement and appropriate steps would be taken if Saito had help from someone inside the facility. Whether or not Saito remained in the Bay Area, where he allegedly has family members, is still unclear. There, Chin said he plans to show a judge that the escape was planned and executed in a "premeditated" and "methodical" way and the court should raise the bail or hold Saito in jail. He said police didn't advise him of any threats at the facility.

Duterte Says He Killed Someone as a Teen Over a Look
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to slap a United Nations investigator who criticised his deadly war on drugs. Xi Jinping for the timely and crucial help that he extended to our country when we were fighting the siege of Marawi", he said.

"Randall Saito is a very disturbed, mentally ill individual", said deputy prosecutor Jeff Albert at the time, according to KHON.

Authorities in Hawaii are trying to determine how Saito obtained a backpack ―seen on surveillance video inside the taxi he took to the Honolulu airport ― that contained a change of clothes, a cellphone and an unknown amount of cash.

Maui police say a Hawaii man once accused of murder who escaped from the state's psychiatric hospital has caught a flight off Maui. Saito is described as being six feet tall and heavy set with black hair. Tashima is concerned that Saito could commit the same "very heinous and violent offense" again.

Defense attorneys sought to have him released in 2000.
