Trump Picks Alex Azar To Lead Health And Human Services

Trump Chooses Alex Azar for Health and Human Services Secretary

President Donald Trump has nominated former pharma executive Alex Azar as secretary of Department of Health and Human Services.

Azar is a former pharmaceutical executive and worked for top company Eli Lilly for almost a decade, becoming president of Lilly USA in 2011. Trump confirmed Azar's nomination on Twitter on Monday morning, writing, "He will be a star for better healthcare and lower drug prices!"

Trump's first HHS secretary, Tom Price, resigned in September after his extensive use of private and military jets at taxpayer expense was revealed.

The new HHS secretary will be tasked with implementing Trump administration efforts to unwind Obamacare, a top campaign promise of his, and overseeing the drug industry, which Trump has said is "getting away with murder" by charging high prices for prescription medications.

The firm represents a sophisticated client base of Fortune 100 life sciences, health care services companies, and providers as well as innovative, venture and private equity backed companies in diagnostics, digital health, health information technology and health care services.

He left Lilly in January 2017 and now consults and counsels with pharmaceutical and health insurance companies.

Gonzaga athletics shares top spot nationally in graduation rate

"Happy to announce, I am nominating Alex Azar to be the next HHS Secretary".

Azar, who now works for a consulting firm, worked as the HHS general counsel from 2001 to 2005 in the George W. Bush administration.

Azar's earlier HHS nominations in the Bush era sailed through the Senate. He has been critical of the Affordable Care Act and has supported converting Medicaid into block grants.

Prior to his downfall, Price was once touted by the home health care industry as a strong advocate for in-home care. He previously worked in the Health and Human Services agency during the George W. Bush administration.

President Donald Trump may occasionally erupt with passionate criticism for biopharma companies and the execs who run them, but once again he's going with an industry insider for a top government post.

As secretary, Azar would have broad authority over many aspects of the program.
