Missouri attorney general investigating Google

Google CEO Sundar Pichai takes the stage during the presentation of new Google hardware in San Francisco on Oct. 4 2016

During a news conference today, Hawley says he wants to know if Google is breaking Missouri law by the way it's collecting, using, and releasing information about its users and their online activities.

The subpoena seeks information about Google´s use of the vast trove of data it collects, including information harvested from devices, online queries and credit card transactions.

Mr. Hawley said the state's preliminary investigation found that Google may be collecting more information from users than the company is telling consumers and that users don't have a "meaningful option" to opt out of Google's data collection.

Google, which has challenged the European regulators' fine, didn't immediately comment.

Missouri's attorney general says his office will investigate Google for potential violations of the state's antitrust and consumer-protection laws. It's also looking into allegations that the company manipulates search results to favor its own websites over competitors', which has been the subject of recent scrutiny in Europe.

Hawley on Monday said he also agrees with sentiments from the White House, saying Moore has a right to defend himself against the claims reported by the Washington Post.

In a statement, Google spokesperson Patrick Lenihan, said, "We have not yet received the subpoena, however, we have strong privacy protections in place for our users and continue to operate in a highly competitive and dynamic environment".

"Whether that's the Google search engine, Google mail, Google flights, Google shopping - Google is ubiquitous", Hawley said in an interview with St. Louis Public Radio.
