U.S. gymnastics star Aly Raisman reveals abuse by former team doctor

Aly Raisman says she was sexually abused by US national team doctor

Three-time gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman was sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and is "angry" about the culture that allowed the abuse to go on, she said in an interview with "60 Minutes".

Raisman is the second member of the famed "Fierce Five" team of American gymnasts to speak out about Nassar, the former team doctor who has been charged with various counts of sexual misconduct and child pornography.

In a preview for the 60 Minutes interview, Raisman, who is now 23, does not detail the alleged sexual abuse by Nassar, but said she was first treated by him when she was 15-years old.

Raisman says a lot of people have asked her why Nassar's accusers didn't speak up sooner. More than 130 women, many of them former athletes, have filed civil lawsuits alleging that Nassar sexually abused them under the guise of treating them for hip, back, and other athletic injuries.

RAISMAN: Why are we looking at why didn't the girls speak up?

"I am angry", Raisman said in the CBS interview. He is now in jail after pleading guilty to federal child pornography charges in July.

Larry Nassar is accused of multiple sexual abuse on gymnasts for almost 20 years.

In the Sunday show 60 Minutes, which was broadcast on Friday, Aly Raisman said that he had undergone the first "treatment" of Dr. Nassar at the age of 15 years. I can't. Every time I look at them, every time I see them smiling, I just think ... More and more women have recently spoken out against him, including another Olympic gymnastics star, McKayla Maroney. That "treatment" began when Maroney was 13 and continued through her stellar performance at the 2012 Olympics.

Trump to ask Xi to ratchet up pressure on North Korea
Trump laughed at the antics of acrobats, then was serenaded by Chinese opera singers in elaborate headdresses and heavy make-up. Trump is expected to demand that China curtail its dealings with Pyongyang and expel North Korean workers.

The book, scheduled to release next week, will include her experiences with the alleged abuse.

"USA Gymnastics is very sorry that any athlete has been harmed", the statement said.

Who else came forward with accusations against Nassar?

He still faces 33 charges of criminal sexual conduct in MI, according to USA Today. He was sacked by USA Gymnastics in 2015 after working with the organization since 1986 - he had been its national medical coordinator since 1996, the New York Times reported.

In June, the gymnastics board adopted the new USA Gymnastics SafeSport Policy that replaced the previous policy.

Raisman and Maroney are the highest-profile gymnasts yet to come forward publicly claiming abuse by Nassar.

In a statement to 60 Minutes, USA Gymnastics said it has made major changes since the Nassar scandal broke. "And then he just continued to go into more and more intimate places", Jessica Howard, who suffered from severe hip problems when she was a gymnast, told CBS' 60 Minutes in an episode that aired February 17. USA Gymnastics now has the power to withhold membership from clubs that decline to report claims of abuse.

In July, the organization hired Toby Stark, a child welfare advocate, as its director of SafeSport.
