Uber working with NASA to make flying taxis a reality

Uber plans to launch UberAIR in LA in 2020. Uber

"Uber's participation in NASA's UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) Project will help the company's goal of starting demonstration flights of UberAIR in select USA cities by 2020", the ride-sharing company said in a statement.

An UberAir journey between Los Angeles' airport and the Staples Center arena, for example, would take 27 minutes - three times less time than the same journey by vehicle.

Uber has partnered with NASA to help it develop air traffic management systems for its flying taxi initiatives, chief product officer Jeff Holden said on Wednesday. It's nothing more than a concept-the same as the endless flying vehicle projects before it.

At the Web Summit in Lisbon, the company announced that they would start testing flying taxis in Los Angeles by 2020.

The project, dubbed Elevate, hopes to trial aerial taxis in Dallas, Dubai and Los Angeles by 2020.

Customers could hail a flying taxi much in the same way they would with an Uber auto: via smartphone. The cost of owning a auto can be incredibly burdensome depending on your circumstances, so it's good that we're thinking of ideas on how to make it easier for people to get around, and at a reasonable cost.

Kevin Spacey assaulted my teen son
The press conference came nearly a month after Unruh first tweeted that Spacey, 58, had assaulted a loved one of hers. As CrimeOnline previously reported , Unruh tweeted on October 13 that Spacey, 58, had assaulted a "loved one".

Want to experience what it will be like to push a button and get a flight with uberAIR?

If everything goes according to plan, it will also be economical.

It expects to cut down a journey time of one hour and twenty minutes down to less than half an hour including transfers to and from the take-off and landing points.

Uber is looking to speed development of a new industry of electric, on-demand, urban air taxis, Holden said, which customers could order up via smartphone in ways that parallel the ground-based taxi alternatives it has popularized while expanding into more than 600 cites since 2011. "[I hope people say], 'I cannot believe how affordable this is". We haven't even fully figured out how to regulate commercial drones, but Uber has been promoting its 2020 launch date since past year. It is no wonder then, that Elon Musk's Boring Company chose L.A.as their first location to dig traffic-bypassing tunnels. Last month, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO showed off the first photo of a tunnel being dug in the Los Angeles area.

The company has a litany of notable partners on board, including real estate developers and aircraft companies to develop the vehicles and take-off and landing hubs. Those sleds would pick them up at designated spots above ground along the tunnel network.

Uber envisions a day where "tens of thousands" of people will fly above ground traffic using Uber Air.
