Twitter now allows you to post 280 character tweets

Twitter will allow users to tweet up to 280 characters from the previous 140 characters. As a further blow to all the 140 diehards out there, the company removed the number-based character count from the bottom right of the "compose new Tweet" box and replaced it with a circle. Additionally, people who have more room to Tweet receive more engagement such as likes, and retweets, get more followers, and eventually, they spend more time on Twitter.

So, since Tweets hit the character limit less often now, it is understood that people now spend less time editing their Tweets in the composer. As Twitter explained in a blog post last month, some languages are more susceptible to cramming than others. City tweeted, "280 characters means we can now go..."

Twitter, meanwhile, appears also to be banking that by freeing users from the 140-character straitjacket, its platform will gain in popularity. In most cases, it doesn't seem like most people are actually increasing the length of their tweets; we have apparently been trained well.

Axed Luiz faces fight for Chelsea future, warns Conte
I saw him play against Roma [a 3-0 Champions League defeat] the other night and he didn't look anywhere near it. "I try to do this".

Some users were instantly skeptical - after all, they had signed up for a website whose defining features were, as its founder and CEO Jack Dorsey noted, brevity and speed. Those above 190 accounted for a mere 2%.

Actor Isiah Whitlock Jr., famous for his role as Clay Davis on The Wire, used the opportunity to remind Twitter of the character's famous catchphrase.

While Twitter notes that while the change is taking place for most parts of the world, there are still a few that will be sticking with the 140-character limit. In its tests, it notes that 9% of users under the 140-character limit tried to send out Tweets that were too long.
