Rand Paul's accused attacker pleads not guilty to assault

Friend: Rand Paul Attack Was Property-Related

Rand Paul and breaking six of his ribs pleaded not guilty in Kentucky court on Thursday, amid intensifying speculation over what led to the assault.

His longtime neighbor, 59-year-old Rene Boucher, was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree assault.

Paul suffered six broken ribs when he was allegedly tackled from behind.

Boucher faces up to a year in jail if convicted on the charge.

Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Paul, told CNN Thursday that Boucher attacked the senator without any prior conversation.

The neighbor of U.S. Sen. "This is a serious criminal matter involving serious injury, and is being handled by local and federal authorities", Stafford told CNN in a statement. Alicia Stivers says she was the first person to see Paul after the attack. "Anyone claiming otherwise is simply uninformed or seeking media attention".

A pre-trial court date was set for November 30 by Warren County District Judge Brent Potter, ABC News reported.

The Kentucky State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating last Friday's incident, Milliken said.

"It was absolutely and unequivocally not about politics, not about right versus left and not about Democrat versus Republican", Baker said.

Paul tweeted about his injuries Wednesday, sharing the news about his broken ribs and adding that he had a pleural effusion, which is an accumulation of fluid resulting from inflammation or changes in pressure in the chest.

The New York Times reported Monday that the argument began over landscaping, but the senator's later tweeted Wednesday two reports questioning the article. Boucher's attorney has called it "a very regrettable dispute" that was "trivial". "As to reports of a longstanding dispute with the attacker, the Pauls have had no conversations with him in many years".

Paul, 54, told police that Boucher came onto his property in a gated community near Bowling Green and tackled him from behind, the Bowling Green Daily News reported, citing an arrest warrant.
