Gonzaga athletics shares top spot nationally in graduation rate

Rutgers turned in solid numbers in the latest Graduation Success Rate report released by the NCAA

Nebraska Athletics posted its highest Graduation Success Rate in the 13-year history of the rate, according the NCAA. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally mandated methodology because it includes incoming transfers who receive athletic aid and graduate and deletes from the calculation student-athletes who leave an institution and were academically eligible to compete. This year's rate is based on the average of student-athletes who enrolled in 2007, 2008, 2009 and the most recent data of 2010 and also graduated within six years following their enrollment.

Texas Tech had nine programs either improve or maintain their GSR score from the previous year, led by men's golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's tennis and volleyball who were all at 100 percent.

GSR measures the success of an athletics department in graduating its student-athletes within a six-year period.

"We're proud of the success our student-athletes have made in the classroom", Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. Led by ideal scores by softball, women's tennis and women's volleyball, the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers posted eight scores of 81 or higher. The WCC average is 90 percent and the NCAA average is 85.

Sleepless nights lead to sluggish brain activity
It seems that both states of being cause neurons to respond more slowly, meaning brain signals are slower and weaker. The same phenomenon can occur when a sleep-deprived driver notices a pedestrian stepping in front of his vehicle .

A year ago, five Tech teams finished with a GSR of 100. The program's GSR was 11 points above the national average for Division I football-playing schools and 10 points above the national average for FBS schools. Men's basketball federal rate was a 42-point improvement over the federal rate of 33 while women's basketball improved on the federal rate of 47 by 43 points. Men's basketball has had a flawless GSR for the past seven.

The GSR takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students.

The graduation success rate was developed as an improved measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress leading toward graduation.

The Charlotte 49ers had a GSR of 91 percent, with men's golf, men's and women's tennis and volleyball posting 100 percent rates. Another 14 are at 85 percent or above in the GSR: baseball, men's golf, men's hockey, men's lacrosse, men's swimming, women's basketball, women's golf, women's cross country/track, women's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, women's swimming and synchronized swimming.
