These Transgender Women Made Election Night History

Her victory followed another historic election result Tuesday night as Virginia House of Delegates candidate Danica Roem (D) defeated incumbent Robert Marshall (R) to become Virginia's first openly transgender elected official.

Jenkins won in the city's Eighth Ward, where she had been a policy aide to departing Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden.

With her victory, the former journalist and current frontwoman for a "drunken thrash metal" band called Cab Ride Home, Roem beat a man who has been elected 13 times across a 26-year span. Marshall's quarter-century in office culminated in him being called "Virginia's Chief Homophobe" and now we know why-on the campaign trail, he consistently used incorrect pronouns for Roem and refused to be in the same room as her. Bye bye, bigot!

At the same time, Danica Roem became the first transgender person to be elected as a state official in the USA - by beating a virulent transphobe.

"Andrea Jenkins shattered a glass ceiling tonight - becoming the first out trans woman ever elected to the city council of a major USA city". She walked away with 73% of the vote by connecting directly with her constituents. In an interview with The Washington Post, Jenkins talked about her pivotal victory as a black trans woman.

There were 18 openly transgender candidates that ran in the U.S.in 2017 and there are 11 running in 2018 elections, according to a list compiled by Harvard researcher Logan Casey.

Minneapolis City Council candidate Andrea Jenkins won her race Tuesday night, becoming the first openly transgender woman of color elected to public office in the United States.

"I love you, I love this community, I love this city".

Jenkins has more than 25 years of public service experience.

Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president and CEO of Victory Fund, declared: "Tonight was about fighting back - an unprecedented number of brilliant trans candidates asking for the votes of tens of thousands of Americans, and getting them".

"Across the country right now, we're seeing politicians focusing on divisiveness and anti-equality rhetoric, when voters just want ways to improve their lives", Imse said. She's also a poet, performance artist, and oral historian for the University of Minnesota. Danica Roem became the nation's first openly transgender state lawmaker by winning a Virginia Statehouse seat. "That just shows how respected she is from her lifetime, decades of work, but also how she is someone who brings a glue, who brings a sense of connectedness, and, frankly, I think that's something the city needs right now".
