Facebook wants your nude photos to stop revenge porn

Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

Australian Facebook and Instagram users who are anxious they could become a victim of revenge porn are asked to contact the e-Safety Commissioner, who may tell you to send the nude photo (or photos) to yourself using Messenger.

ABC News reports that the system is being trialled in Australia and three other countries.

Facebook is launching a new program and is asking people to send some intimate images - all in an effort to keep the photos from getting out. Anytime someone tries to upload a photo, it is checked against that fingerprint and rejected if it matches.

"It would be like sending yourself your image in email, but obviously this is a much safer, secure end-to-end way of sending the image without sending it through the ether", said Grant.

Facebook has launched a trial that will see users submit nude photos of themselves in order to prevent the circulation of "revenge porn" on its network. There's no word yet on how long the trial may run.

Facebook has come up with an unusual method of tackling the menace of revenge porn, one that might even seem insane as well. One in five Australians aged 16-49 have experienced image-based abuse but women aged 18-24 are more often targeted, the eSafety website said. CNBC reports Facebook's anti-revenge porn pilot program is available in the U.S., U.K., and Canada.

Facebook will then be able to track the hash online with the help of the algorithms used in photos and video matching tools.

First, you have to get in touch with the e-Safety Commissioner (Julie Inman Grant in this case), and then they might instruct you to upload your nudes to Facebook Messenger in a conversation with yourself.

Facebook's customer support team will then review a blurred version of the image to ensure it's explicit, then "hash" it before deletion.

Some people are applauding Facebook for making strides in preventative measures and others think it is totally invasive.

Roughly 4% of United States internet users have been victims of revenge porn, according to a 2016 report from the Data & Society Research Institute.

"With its billions of users, Facebook is one place where many offenders aggress because they can maximize the harm by broadcasting the nonconsensual porn to those most close to the victim".

Because of these high numbers, Carrie Goldberg, a lawyer who specializes in sexual privacy, welcomed Facebook's revenge porn plan.
