Broadcom may acquire Qualcomm amid existential legal battle with Apple

People crowd into the Qualcomm booth to view a series of new products during the annual Consumer Electronics Show

- Broadcom is considering making a takeover offer for Qualcomm that would value the chipmaker at more than $100 billion, Bloomberg reported on November 3, citing people familiar with the matter.

Sources familiar with the matter tell Bloomberg that Broadcom is exploring the possibility of acquiring rival semiconductor maker Qualcomm.

According to a report in the WSJ, Qualcomm, now embroiled in a number of lawsuits with Apple, is apparently about to receive an unsolicited takeover bid from semiconductor designer Broadcom.

Bloomberg, which was the first to report the news, said Broadcom has yet to make a final decision on the move.

Qualcomm shares rose as much as 19 percent in NY in their biggest intraday move since October 2008, after Bloomberg News first reported the takeover plans. Broadcom's stock also rose on the report, adding $14.13 or 5.45% to $273.63.

Five years ago, when smartphone demand was soaring, Qualcomm briefly overtook Intel in market value.

Pakistani bride kills 17 in botched plot to poison husband
The death toll has been rising since last Thursday, when the tainted drinks were first served and eight people initially died. They revealed that the 22-year-old originally denied poisoning the milk and claimed a lizard had fallen into it.

Both Broadcom and Qualcomm have pending deals that could be affected by a merger. A subsequent report in the Wall Street Journal said the bid could come as early as this weekend.

Broadcom, based in Irvine, was acquired in 2016 by Avago Technologies, a Singapore based semiconductor outfit that has been growing through acquisitions - including LSI Corp., PLX Technology, Emulex and others.

Broadcom, created in 2016 when Avago Technologies Ltd. acquired then-Broadcom Corp. for $37-billion, said this week it will return its headquarters to the USA from Singapore.

Stock of San Diego-based Qualcomm jumped 12.7 percent to close at $61.81.

This comes at a time when Qualcomm itself is trying to complete a $47 billion purchase of NXP Semiconductors.

Qualcomm may soon be extended a way out courtesy of Broadcom, which itself supplies Apple with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo chips.
