Washington Nationals name Dave Martinez as new manager

Nationals to hire Dave Martinez as new manager according to cryptic Wade Boggs tweet

Jon Heyman first reported that Martinez, 53, will be announced as the new manager after the World Series. An official announcement is not expected to come until after the World Series, which is typical for such things. A 16-year major league outfielder, Martinez has been a coach for the last 10 seasons, serving as Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon's bench coach and right-hand man in Chicago (2015-17) as well as with the Tampa Bay Rays (2008-14). Ex-Red Sox manager John Farrell also interviewed.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time. Martinez will be the Nationals' second rookie manager in five seasons; Matt Williams won the National League Manager of the Year Award and took the Nationals to the playoffs in 2014 but things fell apart in his second season and he was sacked after missing the playoffs in 2015.

His new contract is for three years with an option for a fourth year.

Martinez will take over for Dusty Baker whose contract was not renewed after the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Samurai adventure Ghost of Tsushima coming to PS4
In contrast, Ghost of Tsushima appears more grounded in reality, though whether that supposition is true remains to be seen. No release year has been given for it yet but judging from the reveal, it is likely isn't going to make it next year.

Martinez experienced a decade-long education under Maddon, who is considered one of baseball's most forward-thinking managers with a willingness to buck baseball tradition when needed.

That hard-nosed policy came back to haunt the Nationals two years ago when they initially selected Bud Black as their manager but saw negotiations break down and the veteran skipper walk away.

On Monday, the Nationals officially named Baker's replacement. Since the Lerner family purchsed the club in 2006, no manager had been guaranteed more than two years, not even established and successful skippers like Baker and Davey Johnson.

Martinez has been a candidate for the Nationals before, interviewing with the team in 2014 before the job ultimately went to then rookie manager Matt Williams.
