Former Alabama assistant Jim McElwain parts ways with Florida

McElwain's departure comes the day after the Gators were blown out by Georgia 42-7 and six days after McElwain stunned the athletic department - and just about everyone else - with his unsubstantiated claims of death threats being made to players and families. Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin denied Saturday that the school had "any conversations" with the coach or his representatives "regarding a buyout of his contract", but those talks will presumably begin soon.

McElwain was hired in December 2014 to right the offensive ship after several years of struggles under Will Muschamp. He won the SEC East in 2015 and 2016 and finished those seasons ranked on the AP Top 25 (25th and 14th, respectively).

"We've won a few games", McElwain said, "but we haven't won enough, haven't won a championship". That's life. That is this business, and I take full responsibility for all of it.

McElwain started pushing for facilities upgrades not long after he arrived in Gainesville. Football Scoop was the first to report the news.

Although the upgrades were overdue, not everyone appreciated the way McElwain publicly and repeatedly questioned his bosses' support, including after the Outback Bowl win in Tampa. "Look, we haven't been good on offense, I get it". He wouldn't elaborate on the threats publicly, or privately with his administration.

Spanish Deputy PM given temporary charge of Catalonia
But anti-secession rallies have been called for the capital, Madrid , today, and for Barcelonaon Sunday. Meanwhile the regional parliament has been debating a possible declaration of independence .

McElwain later admitted that the threats he was referring to happened "in the past" and said he was wrong to bring them up. But the damage was already done.

Once McElwain's dismissal becomes official, UF will launch a national search for his replacement.

In McElwain's two-plus seasons, the Gators won the SEC's Eastern Division twice and are 22-12 overall and 16-6 in league play.

USF coach Charlie Strong's name will also be mentioned.
