Drone hits commercial aircraft near airport in Canada

Passengers on a small domestic flight had a lucky escape after a drone flying illegally close to Quebec's Jean Lesage International Airport struck their plane.

'This should not have happened, that remote control device should not have been there, ' the minister told CBC News.

It was the first recorded incident of a drone hitting a plane in Canada.

If a drone hit the cockpit window and incapacitated a pilot or damaged the engine in anyway, it could result in a catastrophe said the Canadian Transport Minister during a press conference.

Last year, Dubai's global airport announced trial flights of a drone hunter, which is a remote-controlled aircraft that detects drones that can possibly stray into the airspace of a plane.

Garneau says: "I am extremely relieved that the aircraft only sustained minor damage and was able to land safely.I would like to remind drone operators that endangering the safety of an aircraft is extremely unsafe and a serious offence".

Advanced Education Minister Deb Matthews said she hopes the dispute is settled soon. The site will be updated regularly throughout the strike.

Drones are prohibited from flying higher than 90 metres; the drone involved in the collision was at 450 metres.

"This could have been catastrophic...it could have caused a tremendous disaster".

He said they were following the situation in partnership with airport officials, Quebec City police, NAV CANADA and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Garneau reminds drone operators "all airports, helipads and seaplane bases are "No Drone Zones" and "endangering the safety of an aircraft is extremely risky and a serious offence".

Anyone caught flying a drone too close to no-fly zones (such as airports) without permission can be fined up to $25,000 and even serve a prison sentence; this applies to the flying of drones of any size and for any objective. It appears to have been a recreational done but the government has provided very little information about who was operating the drone or why it violated airspace.

Authorities are keen to identify the drone pilot, to remind him or her of those rules. Transport Canada issued some interim safety measures for the operators of these equipment, while it continues working to regulate that industry and hopes to approve the final regulations in 2018.
