Anne Frank costume pulled after social media backlash

Anne Frank Halloween costume pulled from online store after uproar

"There r better ways 2 commemorate Anne Frank", Carlos Galindo-Elvira, a spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation League in Arizona, tweeted.

So Halloweencostumes.com, an online retailer, removed the item from its website, and its spokesman apologised, saying offending people wasn't the company's intention.

The costume contains a long sleeve blue dress, brown shoulder bag and green beret and was for sale on United States and European websites for a brief period before the backlash gained momentum online.

The picture of the costume features a young girl with her hand on her hip and a slight smile.

Frank was killed in 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany.

While others didn't see a problem with the costume, the same outfit was marketed elsewhere as "Child's WWII Evacuee Costumes" with no mention of Frank - not that children escaping bombings in London is any cheerier.

Screenshots of the costume for sale at HalloweenCostumes.com posted to social media show a smiling girl wearing World War II-era clothing and a beret.

"We sell costumes not only for Halloween, but for many uses outside of the Halloween season, such as school projects and plays", Walker Smith said on Twitter.

A representative for the nonprofit Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect said the costume was offensive and trivialized the suffering of Frank and the millions who suffered and died during the Holocaust, TMZ reported.

In 2013, Wal-Mart and major US retailers removed a costume of Osama bin Laden after the stores received complaints from the Sikh community, the Deseret News reported.

"My daughter had one of these costumes and we didn't associate this to Anne Frank one bit most children dressed like this in them days", said @karencarr001591.

The costume was taken off the site after the company was blasted on social media for "trivializing" the Holocaust, according to the Daily Mail.

HalloweenCostumes.com has apologized for the stunt, but c'mon.
