Facebook and Instagram are down in parts of the U.S. and Europe

Instagram is experiencing problems for users across the UK Europe and US

Just after 11:00am EST, parts of the USA, mostly the East and West Coasts, and Europe starting suffering Facebook outages.

However, the outage of the network is being tracked by independent site, Down Detector, where users all around the world report issues.

Users attempting to reach the Facebook-owned platform Instagram - at least on desktop computers - were also met with an error message.

The hugely-successful photo-sharing social network appears to be offline for hundreds of users in the UK, Europe and United States.

#FacebookDown began trending on Twitter worldwide around 6pm SAST, as Twitter remained functional.

More than 2,500 reports of Instagram downtime were also reported on the service.

"We're sorry for the inconvenience", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.
