World Mental Health Day focuses on the workplace

A way to combat the stigma

In aid of this year's World Mental Health Day theme, which is Mental Health in the Workplace, MoPH, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Sidra Medical and Research Center (Sidra), conducted in-house activities with staff created to raise awareness about the value of promoting good mental health in the workplace.

World Mental Health Day is being marked today with people being encouraged to talk openly about their mental well-being.

But the problem may well be in keeping silent... This starts with regular check-ins - line manager to employee, HR to line manager, employee to employee.

One such young woman is Sarah*, a millennial who suffers from chronic depression and has been working in the media in Pakistan for the last two years. "By then, their performance, confidence and productivity is likely to have been affected".

As a Black woman, and someone who is self-employed, it's not always easy for me to take a mental health day. "Through the course we know that a bit more people would be able to lead in mental health crisis situations". I need to take this offline with you.

The organisation's "Look Beyond The Label" tagline challenges everybody to ignore the misconceptions around mental health as well as embracing the shopping with a social echo mantra also shared by The Big Issue Shop.

Talking about it is not easy, let alone with someone you're interested in. "My sister helped me get an appointment with a psychiatrist and I was diagnosed with a serious mental health disorder called bipolar disorder", the 35-year-old told The Express Tribune. Organisations have a legal responsibility to the welfare of their staff. "Care is one of our core values at Sidra and as an employer of a diverse group of employees from 80 different nationalities, we also understand the need to customize our approach to care".

Don't Ignore The Warning Signs Of Depression.

You need someone who will love you for you and who will appreciate and support every part of you. It's important to send a clear message that workers who are suffering from stress or depression will receive support and not judgement.

Mike Dixon, the HCA's CEO, said: "Many healthcare communication professionals will have worked on initiatives within mental health, but how often do we consider our own mental health or the mental health of those we work with?"

"In addition the "reasonable accommodation" the law refers to which can include flexi-time, a quiet office space, reduction in workload or increased support, is also based on the word "reasonable".

"It is up to the employer therefore to decide how "serious" the condition is to warrant any form of accommodation". Just showing a little kindness and reaching out to friends or family not only helps them out, but can help you as well. "This is stigma and a culture that can only be changed within an organisation, not enforced by the law".

NHS mental health nurse, psychotherapist and podcaster Aimee Leigh said that greater support for staff in the workplace was needed.

"Symptoms such as difficulties in concentrating and making decisions cause significant impairment in productivity at work".
