United Nations warns of more Rohingya refugee influx to Bangladesh

Bangladesh Wants Return of Rohingya Refugees to Myanmar as Soon as Possible

The Rohingyas started fleeing Myanmar after Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts there on August 25, prompting security forces to launch a counter-offensive which the United Nations has described as "a textbook case of ethnic cleansing".

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock told reporters in Geneva on Fridaythat the more than half a million people who have arrived in Bangladesh from Myanmar in recent weeks need a greater level of help from the global community.

As Rohingya Muslims continue to flee from Myanmar and look for shelter in nearby countries including India, it's vital to teach your children why this is happening.

Lowcock said talks between Myanmar and Bangladesh on a repatriation plan were a useful first step.

She said that the majority of the 1.1 million Muslims living in Rakhine state had not fled and that more than 50 percent of their villages were still intact. An equal number had previously fled Myanmar since 1978. The country's security forces also opened fire on Rohingyas, who gathered at the border to cross into Bangladesh.

The government statement said the 17,000 Rohingya have been fleeing Buthidaung since September 26 because they are concerned about their survival, health, and security as a minority ethnic group and that their Muslim relatives in Bangladesh had asked them to come so they could all live together within the same clan.

Hasina said various quarters also wanted to create a situation to divert things in different direction but "we are very much cautious about that".

The International Organization for Migration estimates that 2,000 Rohingya are arriving in Bangladesh every day, according to Joel Millman, an IOM spokesman.

But Mr Lowcock said he believed a "high-level" team would be able to visit the area in the next few days.

The body has previously slammed the actions of the Myanmar military as ethnic cleansing. Myanmar's military responded by killing hundreds of people, triggering an exodus of more than 500,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh. The UN has branded the exodus as historic and a result of Myanmar's deliberate policy of "ethnic cleansing".

Hasina said Bangladesh took an appropriate stance to draw worldwide community's attention to the Rohingya crisis which also compelled Myanmar to open talks on the issue.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's leader, was criticised for not doing more to intervene - but has since spoken out against any human rights abuses.

In Washington, U.S. officials said sanctions and the withholding of aid were among the options available to press Myanmar to halt the violence, but they had to be careful to avoid worsening the crisis.

Kipgen sees the long-term solution to the Rohingya conundrum in the implementation of Kofi Annan-led commission's recommendations. "It is the responsibility of the state not to allow it [radicalization] to happen", he said.
